INTRODUCTION TO TECHNIQUES IN PATHOLOGY DIAGNOSTIC LABORATORIES

Synopsis

Pathology is a discipline that involves understanding of the various cellular processes that occur in normal and disease conditions. Molecular changes due to certain diseases can be detected by using specific instruments available at the diagnostic laboratory. Therefore, the module will give you insights of how these molecular changes lead to disease and methods used to detect the abnormalities at the level of DNA and protein expression. Besides that, you will be able to observe on how the laboratory tests are performed at the pathology laboratories.

Objective

The module aims to provide understanding on basic principles of the techniques used in the pathology laboratories. It will cover topics related to the application of the techniques for the purpose of diagnosis and prognosis of diseases.

Learning Outcome

  • Relate the basic principles of pathology laboratory techniques and the application of each technique in the diagnosis and prognosis of a particular disease.
  • Demonstrate skills learned from the practical videos.
  • Describe in detail the appropriate medical laboratory tests based on the characteristics of a given disease.

The topics will be covered in this module

- Medical Laboratory Techniques

- Concepts of diseases and their detection using laboratory techniques

- Medical laboratory organization

- Introduction to Anatomic Pathology

- Techniques in Anatomic Pathology

- Principles of Techniques in Anatomic Pathology

- Overview to Chemical Pathology

- General Principles of Analytical Methods in Chemical Pathology.
